With the soccer season coming up, there are a lot of people ready and excited to try out and make the team. Alex Munguia (11) is a soccer player who wants to try out for goalkeeper and make varsity because he has a passion for the sport, and he has been on the team for the past two years. He treasures all the memories and friends he has made along the way and would like to continue doing so for this season and the next.
“Being on the team is more than just playing the sport, it’s about improving ourselves and helping each other out,” Munguia said. He enjoys the competition with other schools and seeing how different the campuses are from Granger. Soccer also helps him improve his skills on and off the pitch. He also enjoys learning new things from upperclassmen. He finds being around older people and upperclassmen useful in learning more and receiving advice about the future. His goal is to win the region and win the state championship with his team.
“I’ve been training non-stop and trying to improve my skills so I can be the goalkeeper for the varsity team,” Munguia said.
Coach Stockstill runs the boys’ soccer team and oversees all the soccer information. “We usually take around 70 athletes for three total teams,” Stockstill said. The three teams include a freshman and sophomore team which is only available for 9th and 10th graders. There is also a junior varsity and a varsity team for which everyone is eligible. Each team has space for around 23 athletes.
“We have a good group of returning players. It’s my fifth season here at Granger so we’ve implemented a culture that we expect players to demand the most of themselves on and off the field,” Coach Stockstill said. He also said, “We’re excited to bring in new players that can help us continue to improve that culture.” He is excited to guide all the players to their best abilities and capabilities and push them to their best.
He also wants them to actually try their best and take this seriously. He wants to give his best and go all out for the teams and help Granger High School win region and state championships. His focus is on seeing the best fit for each position. Once all the teams are settled, he will be focused on meeting new players and working on improvement.
To be able to try out and join the Granger soccer team, players need a minimum of a 2.0 GPA and may not have failed more than one class during the second quarter. They must be registered on the registermyathlete.com website. During the registration process, players will need to upload a birth certificate and a sports physical form. Tryouts will be held on February 24 and 25.
