MANY HIGH school students across Utah participated in the 2026 Utah High School Clean Air Marketing Contest, in which five Lancers won a prize. The students who won are Brook Rapp (10), Johnny Lopez (12), DJ Barber (12), Cassie Ibarra (12), and Yoselyn Zavala (11). Leaders for Clean Air are donating an electric vehicle charging station as a lasting legacy of Zavala’s 2026 winning entry to help preserve air quality.
While spring sports are happening at Granger, many worry about the athletes who are outside every day, practicing in the bad Utah air pollution. Lancers can help fix Utah air pollution for the future. Many Lancers have younger siblings who will come to Granger soon, so trying to address the air pollution to the best of their ability will hopefully help everyone eventually.
Barber won third place overall for this contest and hopes the it will have a big impact. “It’s a pretty big competition since it talks about Utah’s air and artists have a large impact we are trying to make to save Utah’s air,” Barber said. Knowing that artists could make a big impact, Barber wants everyone to know that they can help improve Utah’s air quality, especially to help athletes. Breathing polluted air can damage athletes’ lungs and make it harder for them to practice.
“My inspiration was actually my younger brother — a picture of him was my reference. He was riding his bike, and I saw his helmet and thought it was cute. I knew it would fit in with my drawing,” Zavala said. She won Granger an electric vehicle charging station, which made her happy and grateful for the opportunity. Shes excited to inspire others to make an impact!
