SPORTS is something Granger does well, and that includes the swim team, which has made it to the state championship. The Granger swimmers are not only talented but also hardworking and dedicated,” Coach Loomis said. “What I’m most proud of is their work ethic and dedication and how they were able to psych themselves up before each race, which set them up to drop good times,” Coach Loomis said.
The swim team is obviously a talented group of athletes, but they are also very respectful peers who show great sportsmanship toward their fellow swimmers. “Every time a swimmer was up there on the medal podium, the team would cheer for them as well,” Coach Loomis said. Other coaches also recognized the swim team’s sportsmanship at the meet. Loomis thinks the State Championship swimmers would be a big inspiration to the swim team. The swimmers have made great improvements and achievements this year, and that shows how they’ve grown. Coach Loomis thinks this year, out of the four years of her coaching swim, they have seen the most growth, specifically from kids who wouldn’t swim before.
The swim team is very proud of its success this year. “I think my best moment would have to be finally being able to drop 1:30 on my backstroke,” Stacey Wilkins (12) said. Wilkins is most proud of her backstroke getting better over time. At first, her backstroke wasn’t as good, but she worked on it and got better over time. “Sometimes it’s hard, but it is so fun to swim with everyone on the team,” she added.
The team has a strong bond and a promising future. In Wilkins’s head, before a race, she reminds herself that she can do it, to try not to worry too much about things, and to focus on the here and now.
The Granger swim team is an inspiring bunch of students who are sometimes inspired by Granger High School Lancers as well. Nathan Holmgren’s (12) friends help push him harder. Holmgren’s goal in the beginning for swimming was to go on and break a couple of school records. Thanks to his talent and hard work, Holmgren reached that goal and broke those school records in his final year on the team.
