DURING the holidays, Granger’s many clubs make donations and host several fundraising activities. All clubs do something a little different. Lancers can find more specific information about club activities on Granger High’s Instagram page or on each club’s own Instagram page.
Lancer Action Team (LAT) is great at getting students’ attention and increasing their involvement. The Lancer Action Team is a service learning class where students help their community. Every year between Thanksgiving and Christmas, LAT does Sub for Santa. They get together and raise money. This is one of the biggest and most successful fundraisers at Granger; Lancers always raise a bunch of money.
Jacqueline Bartolo Gonzalez (12) is the President of the Lancer Action Team and has been part of the club for two years. During her time with LAT, she says it has been amazing and that she absolutely loves it. Most students are so caught up in the competition that they don’t really realize what it is for.
“The Lancer Action Team is in charge of a big fundraiser called Sub for Santa, now named Season of Sharing. LAT has hosted this fundraiser for several years and holds competitions for each class. The main purpose of hosting this fundraiser is to help families in need,” Gonzalez said.
During this time, many people are giving their time to help others. It’s inspiring to see every Lancer participate in these events. “What I like about Season of Sharing is shopping for each family member as if it’s for your own family and helping wrap each present for that person with a lot of care,” Gonzalez said.
The holidays are all about giving and spreading joy. Even the littlest things can mean so much to others who may be less fortunate. Kellie Cotino (11), the junior class president, is also a part of LAT. “One thing I like about Sub for Santa is that we get to change at least one family’s Christmas. This is my favorite fundraiser because it helps our community a lot, and it’s also really heartfelt and could really change someone’s life,” Cotino said.
The purpose is to make a family have something special and memorable for the holidays. “Being able to change someone’ s outlook on Christmas or even have that special excitement that is opening a Christmas present. That feeling is so special, and everyone deserves to experience that feeling,” Cotino said.
The class that raises the most funds earns a treat and a show during the winter assembly, courtesy of their SBO president. This year, the juniors took the win for the first time. “The juniors raised $1,037.38. That is so crazy because this is the first time juniors have beaten the seniors. I’m very proud and amazed by my class. But I am a little scared of the punishment we are going to have during the assembly,” Cotino said.
Sub for Santa, now Season of Sharing, is a great way to help people in need and a fun way to keep competition lively among the different grades at Granger High School.
