WEST VALLEY City is an important city in Utah. It has a rich history and lots of diversity. As a matter of fact, West Valley is Utah’s second-most populous city, with a population of over 140,230 residents, just behind Salt Lake City. In this great city, many groups give back to the wonderful community through service projects. One of those groups is known as the West Valley City Youth Council. This is a group created by the city of West Valley to get kids involved in local government and serve the community.
Travis Aiono is the current West Valley City Youth Council advisor. He became the advisor in the spring last year. Taking it over from Clover Meaders. He has single-handedly revitalized the group. Bringing new members all across the West Valley and starting new service projects to help our community. The most important thing Trav brought to the table was “Social Club.”
Social Club is a monthly event hosted by the West Valley City Youth Council that brings the youth together. These Social Club events are small hangouts for all youth ages 14-18 in the West Valley area. They are different every time. In September, they had a hangout at the Cultural Center with lots of food, games, and a DJ, and in October, they had a Monster Mash dance at City Hall. At most of these events, there are cash prizes! For example, at the Monster Mash dance, there was a cash prize for the scariest and funniest costumes.
The overall opinion on these events is that they are super fun and engaging. Sometimes there is too much food. So you can take a whole box of pizza for yourself. If you are at all interested in attending one of these events, follow “wvcut” on Instagram to know where and when the next Social Club will take place. Remember, it is FREE and a good opportunity to meet kids you never would have met otherwise. Also, maybe you’ll find some huzz at one of these events.
Another important thing to remember about the WVC youth council is that it is a good learning opportunity if you are interested in local government. They’ve got to meet the City Manager of WVC, Ifo Pili, and City Council Member Cindy Wood of District 4, among other city officials. Soon, they will visit the Utah State Capitol in Salt Lake City.
The West Valley City Youth Council isn’t limited to Granger. There are members from Hunter, APA, and even Cyprus. It brings the students from all these schools together to give back to their community. In 2025, the council helped the West Valley Police Department give presents to low-income families, carol to senior citizens, help run Friendsgiving at the cultural center, and many, many other service projects. In 2026, they hope to help even more people in West Valley City.
