DR. TYLER Howe was the principal here at Granger for the last three years, but he left this year to take on the assistant superintendent position for the entire district. He gave students at Granger many opportunities and helped improve the school as a whole. Now, he makes decisions that affect every school in the district, and his time here at Granger played a part in his guidance for the whole district.
Though he started as a teacher and principal in an elementary school and moved on to junior high schools before becoming a high school principal, Howe says that high school was his absolute favorite place to work. “It’s just so much more exciting. The kids are a blast, they’re funny and smart, and always challenged me to do better,” he said. “I learned a lot about what exactly kids need to graduate and how to organize the school to give them the best of what they need,” he said.
Since Granger is such a large school, much of what he learned and applied here can be implemented across the district. “Things that work here in a school with 3,000 students will work in a school like Skyline with 2,200 students,” he said. Specifically, he mentioned how grades are communicated to students and parents, and how to provide students with extra support in subjects during flex time.
Dr. Howe must communicate with the different principals across the district to figure out what would be best for their schools. He says that Granger helped him learn how to organize the help and extra support students might need to graduate. “I’d like to see a very specific plan for each student for each quarter that depends on their credit progress, so we can help and give them the support they need moving forward in their high school career,” he said.
Howe looks fondly on his time at Granger. He says that Granger was his favorite school to work in and the best three years in his career. “My other schools were great, but Granger was my absolute favorite. It always felt like something exciting was going on. I loved attending all the sports, plays, and seeing what sort of field trips students were doing,” he said.
His time here at Granger helped him figure out what the students of the district need at large and how to help further the individual students succeed, and his new position has even helped him look back and improve Granger further with things like the one lunch policy, which is aimed to help students find a better social and educational balance to enhance attendance and students’ chances at success.
Overall, Dr. Howe has done an excellent job for the community here, and what he’s learned from here is being applied at the district level. His work has improved students’ chances of success across the board, but he misses working with the students of Granger, so if you ever see him around the halls, make sure to say “Hi!”
