HALLOWEEN’S over. Winter has started. It’s time to get ready for the best holiday of the year, Christmas! Everyone is getting ready to put up lights, set up their Christmas tree, and bring out the dusty decorations that have been sitting around for a year — the anticipation of attending or hosting all the events and get-togethers with your loved ones. People have different opinions on how Christmas should be decorated. People’s decorating styles have changed over time.
This time around, people are looking for new ideas and things to try. TikTok and social media are a big thing worldwide. It’s a fantastic source of inspiration for the holidays, while others share their tricks and hacks, and what they use to set up their house. People go on and express what vibe they think is better and compare all the different ideas. They’re trying to bring in a new aesthetic, called “beige Christmas”.
This new aesthetic of minimizing decoration for a ‘cleaner’ and ‘simpler’ look. Every year, this look gets more recognized. They choose a simple color that matches the aesthetic they’re going for. Most of the time, it’s colorless and the complete opposite of a classic Christmas. I do think it brings out neatness in their decorations, which may be what they’re going for, but the lack of decorations slacks the full, complete feeling this season should have.
The latest Christmas aesthetic is called “tacky.” It includes decorations with all the traditional colors: red, green, yellow, and more. A classical Christmas decor always brings a different kind of warmth into an environment. It’s always nice to be surrounded by a cozy, elegant, and comforting feeling in your home; it brings back nostalgia. To me, a traditional Christmas is wearing ugly Christmas sweaters, setting up colorful lights outside, and a classic, green-decorated tree with bright ornaments. People may call this “bad taste,” but it’s always been so comforting to me.
My house is always decorated in bright colors. Although it may not be a crazy number of decorations, it’s the thought that has been so meaningful to me. The excitement of setting up decorations with my siblings and parents will be something I treasure forever. Every year, we get together to set up the Christmas tree and argue about where the crazy ornaments should go or who should put the star on the tree. My parents never cared how messy or tacky the house looked as long as it brought happy memories to everyone.
This time around, it’s fun to see everyone in the holiday spirit. I reminisce about back when I was a kid, which meant opening Christmas presents wrapped in crazy, colorful paper with Santa’s face on it. As I get older, the eagerness to prepare for Christmas and wait for that day to arrive has changed since I was a little girl. What brings me joy now that I’m older is seeing all the other younger kids experience that kind of feeling, but it feels wrong that people are trying to take the color away from what makes a traditional, colorful Christmas.
