AS THE HOA hoa season arrives at Granger, we can expect students to begin thinking about their aesthetic and the atmosphere around West Valley. Twilight, grossing over 3 billion worldwide, and although some say it’s just another film about vampires, in my opinion, it is THE film about vampires and the foundation itself. Supernatural and paranormal films have always drawn attention because of their unrealistic elements and fantasy. For example, Harry Potter and The Vampire Diaries: two different films yet with such a big, yet passionate, fan base.
Although it has been more than a decade since the adaptation, they are bringing it back to theatres two days before Halloween. We’ve seen collabs after collabs, with the most recent ones being with ColourPop and Crocs. ColourPop launched a makeup line based on the Twilight films, with all products intricately designed. Ranging from individual makeup products to the entire collection. Crocs is planning to release Edward Cullen x Jacob Black team-based shoes with charms included on November 18.
We can notice that somehow this will never die down, because even in my very own experience, I have been rewatching since the sixth grade, leading up to my final year of high school, where I decided to have a Twilight-themed birthday party. It all started when I sent out the invitations and began to prepare. I made my own drinks and bought decorations that would bring the vampire aesthetic to life. During the party, one of my friends snuck my other friends into my bathroom to put on fake vampire bite tattoos for fun.
Around Halloween, it’s become even more common to see people dressing up as vampires, whether inspired by Twilight or just the classic gothic look, keeping the trend alive years later.
Salt Lake City also had a Twilight film concert on September 28, where we were able to not only watch Twilight on the big screen but also hear the soundtrack performed live with live instruments, truly living in the moment.
And as the breeze begins to hit, we can start to notice a pattern of layering and dressing for the weather within fashion among students. Especially among the girls, I can recognize it was Twilightcore, most known for Bella’s Swan’s wardrobe that has always been brought to social media where girls look onto Pinterest to find that perfect blend of Y2K fashion and gothic-inspired casual chic clothing, including low flared jeans, zip up hoodies, and those earthy and neutral tones.
As an audience, we tend to find these films captivating and alluring due to the nostalgia and escapism of early 2000s culture, and we’re always able to come back to rewatch them because they’ll never get old. Although we still judge and love these paranormal or supernatural movies, we should give them a chance because they capture a sense of emotion and connection and have shaped this generation’s understanding of romance, style, and fantasy in ways worth appreciating.
