MUSIC has always been a part of Lancers’ lives. What determines whether they like a certain song is if they can connect to it. Everyone has their own favorite music, and this new year, Lancers have created their own unique playlists. Lancers listen to music for a variety of different reasons. Whether it’s to relax and study, or if it goes deeper and helps them feel connected to their cultural roots.
“I’ve been listening to a lot of Frank Ocean recently. He is definitely one of my top three favorites, the others being La Santa Grifa and Tyler the Creator,” Chantel Lozano (12) said. She enjoys the chill vibe these artists’ music has. “Music has been important to me because I embrace both of my cultures through it,” Lozano said. She feels that she connects with her Mexican and American cultures through her different tastes in music, including Spanish rap, R&B, and hip-hop. She recommends Lancers to listen to “Tocame” by La Santa Grifa.
“My top artist this year has been Julie because my favorite song by her is called ‘April Boom’ and April is the month I was born,” Axel Mena (12) said. “Music fills the silent space, like when you’re on a walk by yourself,” they said. Music helps add life to moments that may otherwise be long and boring, like car rides, doing homework, or long days at work. Mena recommended to students a song called “Breathe onto Me” by Wisp.
“My favorite artist this year has been Laufey. I enjoy her music because it sounds very calm and relaxing,” Elvis Macotela (11) said. Macotela enjoys music that has smooth and calming vibes. Music is important to him because it’s like meditation, and it helps him relax after a long day.
In addition, Macotela says that his music matched his personality because he is a chill guy. He recommends that students listen to “The World is Ending” by Lil Darkie.
“My favorite artists this year have been The Marias and Ivan Cornejo. Both artists give a calm and heartbreaking vibe,” Alex Ramirez (10) said. He loved these artists because he missed his “casi algo,” his “almost something”. These artists helped him get through heartbreak and reminisce about something that just couldn’t be. Ramirez recommends Lancers listen to a much more upbeat song that he prefers called “Hoy Todo Cambio” by Grupo Marca Registrada.
Lancers enjoy music that relaxes them or that they can connect to in some way. Whether it’s to connect to their cultural backgrounds or if it’s to get over a heartbreak. Everyone has their own special taste in music.
