ON JUNE 20, Netflix released KPop Demon Hunters. The film is about K-Pop superstars Rumi, Mira, and Zoey, who are demon hunters who use their singing to forge a magical barrier called the Honmoon.
Throughout the generations, new trios form, which in the present time are called Huntrix. Since its release, this film has gained a lot of popularity and has reached all the way to Granger High. In the months following the premiere, many were either talking about the movie or singing along.
One student in particular, Eddi Sidik (12), caught attention after posting an Instagram reel of himself dancing to the film’s “Soda Pop” dance routine. This performance introduces Huntrix to the demon boy band in the movie. The dance quickly became a trend on TikTok and went viral. Sidik says a close friend had recommended him to watch it, and his favorite moment was the introduction of the Saja Boys. They were introduced in a very dramatic and attention-grabbing manner. There was one specific scene where the male main lead, Jinu, bumps into Rumi, the main character, and knocks her over, but as that scene plays, a well-known song plays, “Love, Maybe” by Melomance.
“I do relate to the insecurity of picking between two hard choices,” Christy Nguyen (12) said. “Rumi’s arc is about having to find balance between her two identities, part demon & hunter,” she added. She isn’t really into K-Pop, but she decided to watch it and ended up thinking it was awesome with good animation.
One of Granger’s dance teachers sparked interest and turned heads when she created her own routine to one of the iconic songs from the soundtrack “How It’s Done.” For the first weeks of school, she used songs to either warm up her classes or teach students a bit of her own moves. “I knew it was super popular at the time, so I thought it would be a good hook for the beginning of the year, and it was, because a lot of them liked it,” Ms. Hodges said.
She resonated the most with Mira, as she thinks her character is sassy, but Hodges herself isn’t cynical. Mira is shown as a blunt and tough member of the K-Pop group, as there are many individual personalities within the group. She mainly enjoyed the scenes where “Your Idol” and “Golden” played.
Granger students are expecting a sequel where they can learn more and connect to the films. Although the future is uncertain, fans all had unique experiences with this film, where they were able to enjoy the K-Pop world.
