I HAVE just finished my first year of high school! During my freshman year, I found that classes were pretty easy. However, if you don’t pay attention in class, it is really easy to fall behind.
Missing or skipping school can cause you to fall behind, miss important tests, or see your grades drop. But the good news is, you can usually make up the work and get back on track. If you’re given a chance to redo assignments or improve your grades, take it — opportunities like that can make a big difference.
The best advice I can give is to not be scared to ask for help. In the upcoming school year, you’ll be assigned more projects and presentations than you might expect — especially in classes like Freshman Success or AVID. Don’t be afraid to go all out and put effort into them. Even if it feels overwhelming at first, you’ve got this, and your hard work will pay off!
Finding your classes will be pretty simple — the lettered hallways help keep everything organized, and most students figure it out within the first three days. Plus, there are always people around who can help if you get lost.
So do your best on these projects and presentations, and try not to worry about standing out, or looking different from others. Not everyone puts in the same effort, but that just gives you a chance to shine; be proud of the work you do!
Additionally, it is really important to be on time to classes, especially if classes begin with a starter assignment. Starter assignments are typically easy, and worth points that count towards your final grade. With all that being said — be on time!
And that phone? Lock it up in your Yondr pouch. The teachers will send your phone to the office, and it takes forever to get it back.
I’d also say don’t be afraid to talk to people and make new friends in high school. It’s actually easier than you might think, and it can be really fun. Just be yourself and stay open — you’ll find your people.
Granger has a lot of talented students, and you’ll absolutely find the right friends for you. I would also recommend joining sports, engaging with clubs, and participating with other school activities.
Even if you’re unfamiliar with sports, plenty of the teams are looking for eager new players to try out! The coaches are more than willing to help students improve and grow if they’re interested.
Once lunch rolls around, I’d recommend avoiding McDonald’s — it gets super packed during both lunch periods. Because of how busy it is, you’ll risk being late; that 10-piece Chicken McNuggets isn’t worth it.
That’s all the advice I have for the incoming freshmen: don’t stress too much, and just do your best. You’ve got this!
