WITH THE end of the year coming up, a lot of students are doing or needing to do credit recovering. But some people don’t even know how credit recovery works. Now’s the time to learn and get those credits! Here at Granger there are two credit recovery classrooms: Mr. Bernard in E203 and Mrs. Nuttall in E202.
When a student fails a class, they should go to their counselor immediately. “Students shouldn’t wait until their senior year to make up credits. It will only get more overwhelming,” Bernard said. The counselors will be able to say what classes have been failed and what credits are needed. Then students should go talk to either Bernard or Nuttall.
To make up the credits, Lancers have two options: either to pay $10 per packet or enroll in the class for a fee of $25 per quarter and get unlimited packets during that semester. Enrolling in the credit recovery program is just like enrolling in a normal class, students just need to go talk to a counselor.
When starting credit recovery, there is an option to take a pretest on the subject for students who feel that they know it well enough. The other option is to just start the packet right away.
Students who pass the test get to skip the final exam for that subject and immediately earn the needed credit and are done with that packet. There is also no downside to taking the pretest — a failed test leads straight the packet.
While the packets can be a lot of work, just remember that it’s 10 weeks of work for a whole quarter of credit. “The difficulty all depends on the student, if it’s something they struggle with, then it will be hard. But if not then it will be easy,” said Mr. Bernard
This is on lots of Lancers’ minds because the end of the school year is coming up and students need credits for graduation. May 23 is the last day for seniors to turn in packets and take the final exams. “These 9th, 10th, and 11th graders have until their senior year to complete these packets,” Nuttall said. Although there is plenty of time to complete a packet, it is recommended to finish it one in no more than a month.
Students must also make appointments to take the final tests. May 16 is the last day for underclassmen. However, students enrolled in credit recovery can take the tests while in class.
Online credit recovery is another option. This is like packets, but online instead of on paper.
Granite Online can also be used for credit recovery or to even get ahead in credits for students who want to graduate early. Most students doing the normal online packets are usually students who failed a class.
There is also summer school and credit recovery for underclassmen, but not for seniors. Summer school starts on June 8 and ends on July 3, while credit recovery starts June 9 and ends Aug 1.
Seniors who fall short on credits on May 23 can still do credit recovery over the summer, and if they succeed, they can attend a summer graduation ceremony during the first week of August.
