AFTER teaching a class at Skyline High School, Granite District’s superintendent, Ben Horsley, decided to try teaching a social studies class at Granger High.
He previously served as the communications director and chief of staff for Granite School District before being hired as superintendent on July 27. When he was hired, Horsey had no K-12 teaching experience. However, he has been working in the district for about 16 years.
This is his first year at Granger, and he loves working with the Lancers and staff. Horsley’s classroom environment is an amazing place to be, for both learning and guests. He is beyond kind and respectful to his students, and they greatly respect him. He keeps himself and his classes on task, teaches very clearly, and engages with his students and in his lessons.
While his main goal here at Granger is to grow as a teacher, he also looks for challenges in his work and new ways to grow on his own. Horsley has said that he feels the Lancers are more engaged in the work and are here for the work, allowing him to grow and challenge the students. “I feel I have the opportunity to grow and change with the students,” Horsley said.
“He makes his classes interesting, and he explains things really well. He has good presentations and activities, and he’s pretty nice,” Joselinne Moreno (12) said.
“He’s a good teacher. He’s very detailed and talkative with us, and he’s very helpful. His work is challenging but easy to understand,” Andrea Acevedo Sandoval (12) said. She also says that she would take another class from him if he decided to pick up a new period.
Multiple students have said that Horsley is a good teacher who is funny and respectful. “I like how engaged he is with everyone during classes and discussions. He makes sure we have everything we need, and everything is on Canvas,” John David Ramirez (11) said.
“The class is just fun and He’s a cool guy. He makes class very easy to understand and does a perfect job at explaining,” Melissa Clemente (12) said.
Although many students love his class, there are a few who are a little less interested. Linda Cabrera Valencia (12) says that he is funny, but she also criticized his classroom. “His class is very minimalistic. He only has maps and a few other things up,” she said. To be fair, Mr. Horsley did not decorate the classroom.
These students like Mr. Horsley’s class, and they have made it clear that he is doing a good job here at Granger.
