MANY STUDENTS at Granger High School enjoy listening to music, which has a significant impact on their lives and perspectives. With genres ranging from hip-hop and rap to Latin, rock, and R&B, there’s a wide variety to explore, and each student has their own unique tastes and opinions.
Shareth Perez (12) says her taste in music depends on the season. For Halloween, she enjoys listening to songs like “Monster Mash” or Michael Jackson’s “Thriller.” “I’m really excited to listen to Tyler, The Creator’s new album,” Perez said when she found out he was releasing Chromakopia. On a regular basis, Perez enjoys listening to Ferxxo and Bad Bunny.
A lot of students have different types of music that they enjoy listening to when they’re doing certain things. “When I’m in class, I like listening to Jhene Aiko and Lana del Rey,” Yandel Dominguez (10) said. He says that this is because he feels relaxed, and in a better mood when listening to these artists. One thing Dominguez said about music was that he really wants Frank Ocean to release a new album.
Bryan Soria (12) says that he enjoys listening to Veeze and Lil Yatchy because he likes the sound that both of these artists have. Something Soria is looking forward to is traveling to Nevada to see Playboi Carti and Travis Scott perform live at Complex Con. “I think they’re the two best performers to see live,” Soria said. He is really excited to experience Complex Con.
Emmanuel Hernandez (12) is a great example of someone who enjoys all types of music. He says that at school, he likes listening to Kendrick Lamar, Tyler, The Creator, Ken Carson, 21 Savage, and Travis Scott. “When I’m in a calm mood, I like Steve Lacy and MF DOOM. Outside of school, I enjoy listening to Peso Pluma, Natanael Cano, Neto Vega, Fuerza Regida, and other Mexican artists,” Hernandez said.
Melissa Clemente (12) says that at school she likes to listen to calm music because it helps her focus on her work. Some artist examples are Partynextdoor, Drake, and PinkPantheress. “At home I like Tame Impala, Destroy Lonely, Karrahboo, and Lana del Rey,” Clemente said. She’s also really excited for Lil Uzi to release Eternal Atake 2.
Josue Marquez (9) doesn’t have a favorite artist. “I listen to all types of music, but mainly Mexican music,” Marquez said. Marquez says that he doesn’t know much about artists, and that music doesn’t interest him as much as other things.
Josue Marquez’s older brother, Gerardo Marquez (12) says that he listens to rap and Mexican music. Some artists he enjoys are Peso Pluma, The Weeknd, and Junior H. He is really excited for The Weeknd to drop his new album.
Joel Barbosa (11) says that he listens to a lot of different artists while at school. The artists he enjoys are Lul Jody, Bris, Partynextdoor, Sonder, Ken Carson, Baby Smoove, and Playboi Carti. Barbosa said that he wants Ken Carson and Playboi Carti to release their new albums; he wants to hear the way each project is going to sound. Barbosa also says that he likes listening to Frank Ocean and Drake when he feels like the vibe is calm.
Each student’s personal taste in music adds to their unique personality. It’s great to see the diversity in what students enjoy while also witnessing how music can bring them together.
