SPEAKER backpack kids fill the hallways with sound waves of unfavorable music. There’s always something new at Granger High School, and this month, students are bringing their speakers onto campus. The way things go, there will soon be news rules set in place that ban backpack speakers from Granger High School.
With miniature speakers such as JBL Clip On becoming smaller and more powerful, speakers are becoming easier to carry around all day.
With the introduction of innovative technologies such as the wireless earbuds and headsets, there should be no need for others to hear your taste in music. Especially in big, crowded areas like the hallways. There are many places to play music, such as parties, or even the park with friends. However, a few kids think that their music should be heard around every corner of the campus.
Everyone is entitled to their opinion of what they believe is the best music. Some people believe rock is better than rap or that K-pop is superior to all, but that doesn’t mean others believe what you believe is the best music taste. That also means they shouldn’t have to listen to that new Killa Mike album that beat Travis Scott’s Utopia in the Grammys.
Speakers have become more affordable and concealable, so it’s easier to mess around with peers in class. Speakers can be used to play inappropriate obnoxious sounds in classes, and with how tiny speakers are getting, it would be difficult to find out who the culprit is. This disruption could cause a change of rules.
Rules should be set in place at Granger High School against speakers. Speakers are very disruptful during class hours and shouldn’t be allowed on school campuses. It distracts those who are focusing on their school work. It makes it harder for the teacher and the student to focus on the lesson. If caught, disruptions from speakers should be monitored and counted towards CPA.
They are just as annoying as those kids who occasionally run down the hallway, yelling. Especially when they do it early in the morning, when everybody is hardly barely awake.
A solution to this problem would NOT be to ban any form of devices that plays music, but instead, to ban student-owned speakers. Earbuds and headphones are great for listening to music and keeping it to yourself. They shouldn’t be used during instructions because they can be seen as disrespectful to the teacher. This varies from teacher to teacher and should be asked.
