TEACHERS and students alike are excited about the upcoming season for boys volleyball. “It’s going to be a fun and exciting year,” Ms. Hess, Granger’s first boys volleyball coach, said. She has previously coached basketball, and she played volleyball when she was in high school. Ms. Hess says that she loves to coach any sport in general, but the one thing that pushed her to decide to coach boys volleyball was the group of Lancers who are interested in playing.
Ms. Hess says that being a coach is not easy and that it has some work involved. One of the things that she says is a little hard to work with is the amount of practice the students do. She is trying her hardest to teach and maintain the key things that they will need to be successful in the sport. There are many keys to success in an athlete’s journey, and staying active outside of playing the sport is one of them. Student-athletes are no different than regular ones.
For months, Lancers have been attending the open gym and showing their interest. They are willing to work hard to earn their place on the team.
“A strong group of people have come out to open the gym, and I hope a lot more people come to join in,” Ms. Hess said. Although students have been going to open gym, there have not been any tryouts yet, so things are still movable and spots on the team could still be available if anyone else goes to the tryout. Anyone interested in joining boys volleyball shouldn’t be shy. Ms. Hess is looking for more people to join. She is looking forward to meeting anyone who would love the sport and could bring something to the team.
Although she has not coached any volleyball before, and this is her first time doing it at Granger, Ms. Hess is excited. She is looking forward to this season of volleyball and what the sport has in store as opposed to a sport that she has coached before such as basketball. It is not just the coach who is excited about the upcoming season — a lot of students are looking forward to the season just as much, if not more.
“Volleyball is a fun and active sport that everyone can enjoy and that anyone can have a fun time playing,” Adrian Lewis (12) said. “The group of people who have gone to open gym are all different people with lots of diverse backgrounds and different personalities.” He thinks that this adds to the fun of everything. He says that he likes the coaches and thinks they are inspiring and motivated to help the lancer athletes play and get better at the sport.
Whether Lancers are playing volleyball, coaching it, or just simply enjoying the sport, everyone sure is excited about boys’ volleyball for this first season and what it will have in store for everyone, not just the people playing, but the whole school. GO LANCERS!
