Bentley Corena (12) says the key components of success in school to be not procrastinating, doing a little homework every day to not fall behind, and trying his best to do assignments the day they’re assigned.
“I need to get enough sleep. I perform a lot worse at school when I’m tired or end up waking up late. Limit distractions when working. I always turn my notifications off when I’m doing homework or studying because I get distracted easily. I think it’s most important not to procrastinate. When I don’t procrastinate, I stress about school a lot less,” he said.
“When I’m on top of my work, I understand the material and can correct it on time. I would also prioritize limiting distractions while working, because that plays into procrastination. I suggest that students should make time for work at home and avoid downtime. For me, that’s scrolling on TikTok, so I try to reduce that and try to make at least half an hour every day for studying or work,” Corena said.
Some common obstacles could be having an unpredictable schedule or not being motivated. I also have an unpredictable schedule, because different things are expected of me by my parents every day, so I try my best to do at least 30 minutes of work whenever I recognize the time to do so,” Corena said.
Nalani barrios Acuna (‘25) says the key components for success in school are being organized so that she can keep track of her assignments and grades. “Just having strong communication and study habits helps a lot. My outline for my five steps would be clear goals, managing time spent, study habits, participating, and taking care of myself,” she said.
Acuna says that her toughest challenge by far was managing her social life and school life. As well as not getting burnt out early on in high school. Her only advice to overcome was to just keep everything in moderation. Her biggest challenge for was burnout. “That was horrible, and getting through it takes time and effort to get through the adversity,” she said.
Cheerleading takes a lot of time out of Evey Moukdahan’s (11) schedule, which is why she stays on top of things and consistently focuses on her work.
“The effort I put into school is very much needed, as I focus and work hard for what I want to accomplish. It’s not just a spurt of effort that makes it possible for me to achieve it, but it’s also how often I put in the work. It helps me maintain my performance in school, so I don’t get into a frenzy,” she said.
“I tend to do assignments or projects early, so I have more time to spend on doing other tasks I have to do. I do this by sometimes multi-tasking, but also by doing assignments one at a time helps, because it makes me focused on one thing and not two or more other things,” Moukdahan said.
