THERE are many stereotypical concepts as to what makes kids happy. There are stereotypes stating that many teens are rebellious and only enjoy “unproductive” activities. Teens are often portrayed as being moody, lazy, and dependent on mobile use; however very few people actually dive deep into what teens actually enjoy.
When teens think about what makes them happy, the most common — and admittedly superficial — answers are sleeping and eating. But a deeper look into their lives and hobbies reveals more meaningful and interesting responses.
Bianca Hernandez (11) has a very unique passion that challenges typical gender and teenage stereotypes, and she enjoys practicing her hobby, “I know it sounds cheesy, but welding makes me happy,” Hernandez said.
Hernandez finds a sense of peace when she’s welding. “Definitely when I first started, I was a real scaredy cat, but once I got over the scary part, it definitely felt very calming,” Hernandez said. She is an an example of how unique activities form a great part in teenagers’ lives. Hernandez began exploring the welding field thanks to her Dad’s interest. “He’s a really hands–on guy, and I thought it would make him happy to see me welding,” Hernandez said.
Sophia Alva (11) is a member of Granger’s varsity swim team. Alva says she enjoys hanging out with friends and exercising because of the adrenaline rush it gives her. The feeling that sports provide makes Alva happy. “I think it gives you that really healthy adrenaline, like before a race, so I really like that,” Alva said. “As for my friends, I just like going out and hanging out with them, I think it’s fun,” Alva said.
The simplest things can create the most enjoyable environments. Moments spent with loved ones are typically the most fulfilling. Matthew Castro (11) says he enjoys running. Castro also gets a sense of happiness from spending quality time with loved ones. “I like to be with my dog, I like to have fun, and I like to hang out with friends,” Castro said. It is amazing how the simplest activities can boost someone’s mood and, in turn, make them happier.
“Just being myself, just doing what I want to do, and living life makes me happy,” Castro said. Castro makes sure to enjoy every moment, taking every opportunity to improve. Other than social aspects, Castro finds fulfillment in his academics. “I like having good grades. It makes me feel good, happy, and accomplished because I try really hard to earn them,” Castro said.
Activities such as spending time with loved ones and pets, achieving one’s goal, being involved in sports, or practicing a hobby all provide teens with happiness. The dedication to a certain goal motivates students and gives them a feeling of accomplishment.
Finding a passion and challenging oneself to pursue it can give teens a sense of satisfaction. Whether it’s improving in a specific subject or spending more time with friends, students should discover what makes them happy and follow it.
