THERE are many students that don’t like the fact that phones are locked during lunch time. Many seniors hate it because it’s their last year of high school, and Yondr pouches have just now become a thing.
“I think the system was a lot better before, and they should’ve waited till we graduated,” Alexa Nava (12) said. A lot of people have similar opinions about the Yondr pouches — especially the fact that students can’t even open them off campus, like during lunch.
Eliu Castro (9) says that is not a good idea, and not being able to unlock them off campus simply doesn’t make sense. Hearing many opinions, this is a common one. Many people don’t mind having their phones locked during class time. Having them locked during lunch time makes no sense to many.
Students have tried many ways to have their phones for messaging and apps throughout the school day. This has caused some disruptions during class time in which teachers have to send phones or students to the office or even call an administrator when students refuse.
However, some students think it’s not a big deal, or it’s a good rule that they have implemented. “It’s fine I don’t really mind,” Pavel Torres (10) said. Some teachers have asked students in class and a decent number of students overall don’t mind. Some even say it is beneficial to their studies. It’s not only Granger high school with Yondr pouches. Cell phone rules are being created nationwide, and many have been implemented in different states. Some schools use Yondr pouches and many other schools have students keep their phones lockers.
A struggle that is seen with having phones in Yondr pouches during lunch is time and communication with friends and family. Parents and students are used to having instant access to each other.
“We should have it out and use it for lunch. Some people don’t have friends or keep contact with friends,” Adrian Ortiz (11) said. Not being able to contact friends during lunch was difficult for some people. It was hard to know where they were or if anyone they know came to school for that day.
Students have blamed the Yondr pouches for being late to class especially after lunch time. Students have even decided to leave phones at home instead of getting them locked away during school hours.
Teachers were suspicious of kids who said that they didn’t have a phone. Now there a system for teachers to check a list and even email parents to verify that a student really has no phone at school. Students wouldn’t mind locking up their phones during class if they were able to have them free during lunch.
