LANCERS this 2024-2025 year at Granger High came with some new rules and enforcement. One of the new rules to discuss is a CPA requirement for every event. Not just dances. Many people are missing out on games and dances due to this, so the big community at Granger High seems smaller.
Lots of people are missing out on their fun high school experience. Isaac Ayala (12) says he believes it is unnecessary because he feels like he should have freedom to go to our school events regardless of CPA because he believes many people have struggled with school for personal reasons and that it’s hard to raise CPA.
He says especially since many seniors want to enjoy their last year with the high school experience that they should just get to enjoy it before graduating. A high school experience is just a one-time thing.
Kris Bonilla (12) says this rule is doing a lot to try to enforce unnecessary rules. He feels like the older Granger rules made everyone, regardless of academic performance, feel welcome at their school and let everyone participate.
He says that Dr. Howe and the administration are doing a great job on rules to help students perform better in school but that this rule, making CPA requirements necessary for every event is crossing the line. He says these rules make the school feel like a prison.
Roberto Carlos (12) says it is not ideal because already a large number of students (15%) do not meet these requirements. Not many people can participate and have a good high school experience.
He says it is hard to get the CPA up, and that no other schools like Hunter, Taylorsville, Kearns or Cyprus do this. Those schools allow their students to have fun and live up their high school years. But on Granger’s end, it’s not the same.
Melissa Clemente (12) says she personally thinks it is a good idea because it helps students stay on track to graduate regarding CPA and stay focused on what’s really important. But there is also a bad side to it because not everyone is able to attend these events and a lot of people that get excited for these fun events unfortunately end up missing out with short notice.
Dr. Howe says that any rule like that is not made just by the principal, but that PBIS (positive behavior intervention and supports) and the athletic department are also involved when it comes to determining these rules for these kinds of things. “I also have involvement when it comes to these rules, but it’s not just the principal’s decision. Of course, ehen new rules come in, everyone’s first thought is that the principal made these rules,” he said.
He also says how he feels pretty comfortable with this rule because, “We have systems to help students fix their CPA fast, so students don’t have to wait, we want students to participate so we give them the option If they want to go and raise their CPA. A lot of people have different thoughts and feelings about this rule. Many people miss out, but at the end of the day getting your CPA up, walking that stage and getting your diploma is the most important thing.”
Students should commit to raising their CPA. The FLEX committee designed FLEX time Monday-Thursday from 7:30 a.m. — 8:00 a.m. It’s helpful for improving in difficult classes and getting extra help on assignments. Students are awarded an hour of CPA for being there. The weekly parent grade check also earns students 30 minutes of CPA recovery credit just for completing that form online.
Many options help students raise their CPA so they can participate in events. CPA can be made up by recording silent reading at home. Here’s a QR:
