GOLF IS often an overlooked sport, from an outside view it can look really simple, but all the team members agree that golf is a fun sport!
“It’s a unique sport in that you have to relax to be good at it. You can’t try too hard at it or else you’ll struggle,” Coach Crowther said. Inexperienced students might be hesitant to join, but the golf team is a great opportunity to learn how to play.
The requirements for joining are a 2.0 GPA and a dedication to learning and getting better at golf. The team practices three days a week after school at the Stonebridge Golf Course from around 2:10 p.m. to 4:10 p.m. That may seem like a long time, but there’s a lot to do.
“We start out putting, then after that we chip the balls. Lastly, we practice hitting the balls with the driver,” golfer Dustin Byrd (12) said. It’s also possible and easy to train on your own, if you need practice.
A question some may have is: “What happens if there’s bad weather or in the winter?” Reese Cloward (10), another member of the team, said. “If the weather isn’t too bad, we just continue to play. But if it gets worse then that’s when we stop practicing.” For the rainy days, the team mainly goes to Top Golf. There is a chance of going to Top Golf if the weather is bad, but that mainly happens in the spring when the girls golf team practices.
“Tournaments can happen Monday through Friday once a week,” Coach Crowther said. They start at 8:00 a.m., but it changes depending on where plyers are placed. Junior varsity tournaments usually end around noon, while varsity goes all day.
This means that players will miss at least a few school days. For some people this makes golf an even better choice. While missing school isn’t the best situation, as long as students pay attention in school, then they should be OK.
Unfortunately, the boys golf team is reaching its maximum capacity at the moment. But there is always next year to join. The girls golf team is starting in the spring, and interested girls can go talk to Coach Crowther in room H-107.
