PICTURE this: it’s assembly time, and hundreds of thousands of Granger High Lancers stampede their way to the main gym. Any freshman is likely to be scared out of their mind. Don’t be afraid to ask upperclassmen where to go; this isn’t their first rodeo. However, many freshmen would prefer to avoid a confrontation. Most times, it’s best to keep a low profile: quickly approach the main gym and quietly take a seat.
Freshmen should be aware of their surroundings. They’re in unfamiliar territory. In such situations, it’s best not to provoke an upperclassman, for freshmen are at the bottom of the totem pole. Above all, freshmen should keep a close eye on their belongings as theft is not uncommon in high school.
Upperclassmen can sense a freshie a mile away. Freshmen should carry themselves with dignity; don’t be a nuisance to nearby classmates. Since it’s their first year, freshmen should be mindful of keeping bridges unburned. In particular, when it comes to assemblies, freshmen should never scream directly into another student’s ear.
Freshmen should always clean up after themselves. Custodial staff shouldn’t be given a reason to think lowly of new students. Snacks such as gum, chips, and candy are tolerated. Don’t jeopardize the opportunity to eat freely. Trash cans can be found at multiple locations surrounding the gym. All students, but especially freshmen, should make use of them.
It is also advised that freshmen refrain from bringing toys to assemblies. Remember, anything resembling a weapon is inexcusable unless, of course, the goal is to have an impromptu meeting with Dr. Howe.
While a trip to the bathroom is forgivable, freshmen should be made aware that excessive movement during assemblies is inconsiderate of those near. That being said, participation in assemblies demonstrates Lancer pride, so have fun!
Also, Freshmen should note that electronic devices should be silenced. Phone calls and text messages can wait until after the assembly has concluded. There’s no need to cause a distraction. Freshmen should take pleasure in the assembly instead.
Be warned: assemblies are loud. However, freshmen should not be intimidated. Rather, they should take the opportunity to enjoy their high school days! The student government, and those who perform, put a lot of time and effort into making the assemblies enjoyable. Don’t ruin the vibe! Freshmen, find enjoyment in these fleeting high school moments. They won’t last forever.
