GIRLS sports is something that’s not recognized as much as boy sports. Football for example, when it’s football season, a lot of people go to the games and crowd the stands. Girls soccer has a few people attending but nothing compared to football. A lot of people say that women’s sports deserve more recognition because they work just as hard and usually play the same thing.
The level of attention doesn’t compare to the boy sports especially when being talked about. “There is a tendency to assume that girls are less than the boys based on the way that some things run around the world and a lot of people haven’t seen it. A lot of people haven’t even given them the chance to see how the women’s games and sports are upcoming,” Mrs. Hess, the head coach for the boys volleyball team said. Basically, society has always seen men’s sports as more exciting, and people just go along with it instead of giving women’s sports a real chance.
People put so much of their attention on boys when women could use more attention, too. It could give the girls more motivation and a chance of being seen. “When my cheer team goes and cheers for football or sometimes even basketball, everyone there is loud, and they scream chants to motivate the players. I’ve been to some girls’ games before, and it’s not loud, there’s a few people screaming, but never enough. Yes, I think they aren’t recognized enough.” Zabdi Curiel (12) said.
Girls deserve to be given a chance at whatever sport they want to do and go pro. Of course, there’s already pro girls teams but it’s so hard to even get in one especially when a lot of colleges mainly look for men on their teams.
This lack of attention isn’t just a high school problem, it happens at the professional level too. For example, the 2025 NCAA March Madness tournament is expected to make almost $1 billion, but men’s teams will get about $216 million while women’s teams will only get $15 million. This happens because TV networks pay way more to show men’s games than women’s. Because of this, female athletes don’t get as many resources, like good training facilities or as many scholarship opportunities, which makes it harder for them to succeed at the same level as men. “Sports should be a little fairer, but I see that big players like Caitlin Clark have made women’s sports more popular. They deserve more resources and money towards equipment and the sport overall.” Miranda Chap (10) said. According to a collection of data, “16.4 percent of pro athletes are women, and 83.6 percent of pro athletes are men,” according to the Zippia.com website.
There has always been a higher percentage of men than women in professional sports. Traditionally girls or women have always been socialized as needing to be more feminine and not as strong as men. That kind of takes the attention away from girls’ sports making them not as important because some might think that they don’t know how to play the sport correctly.
Girls at Granger should start advertising their games a lot more, telling friends and family, showing them it’s possible for women to play just as good or even better than boys. Girls shouldn’t be underrated because sometimes they play better than the boys’ teams.
“There’s a lot of girls who definitely have potential to go pro, but scouts never really look at us because they have a dumb mentality, and I know this doesn’t apply to every scout or recruitment team, but I definitely feel like they think we’re weak compared to guys,” Cassandra Ibarra (11) said.
Every girl who plays a sport should be proud of herself. There is always someone in the stands who notices their talent and looks up to them whether it’s a little girl, a friend, or a family member. Girls’ sports deserve more recognition, and it’s time to give female athletes the support they’ve earned.
