- HOWE is leaving Granger this year. Sadly, he got an offer and an opportunity to be a superintendent assistant covering seven other high schools, including Granger. He will no longer be a principal but will be a leader for all Granite District high school principals as he helps them succeed. He will still be coming to Granger now and then to help the new principal.
When this job became available, he had the choice to either stay at Granger or move on to the district. In the end, he was encouraged to take the offer.
He is not totally sure if the rules are going to still apply for next year or if they are going to be removed. The phone policy was not his choice, it was a Utah’s state decision to have a phone policy at school.
He does not control every school policy on his own. He works with parents, teachers, student body officers, community councils, etc. He does hope the new principal has similar priorities and sticks to the rules that are currently applied at Granger. Howe doesn’t know if the same phone policy will still be applied for next year.
On April 1, the Granite Board of Education announced Dr. Jared Wright, formerly of West High, as Granger’s new principal.
Mr. Howe says he will miss walking the halls, talking to kids and hearing about their good days or learning why they are having a bad day. He says he loves that so much since it’s a fun part of being a principal. He says the best thing he has added to Granger would be the teacher’s advisory since it has helped students get problems fixed and get better grades and do better in school.
The homeroom and FLEX time project has lowered the failure rates, and it affects both the students and teachers. Another good thing would be the system of checking kids in that are late to class, because it lets teachers know their tardy students are on their way. In fact, 93% of the time, students do get to class.
Mr. Howe is most sad about closing this chapter of being a principal at Granger, but he is eager to turn the page by becoming an assistant superintendent in charge of Granite’s other high schools. He says that he spent less time at Granger than he expected — originally, he planned to be at Granger for 10-15 years.
He most definitely wants to be a principal again. If he does have that chance, he would most definitely pick to be a principal at Granger again rather than at any another school — he had a good time at Granger.
He says he will miss being principal at Granger more than at Armstrong or West Lake where he served as principal for many seniors, Howe has been the principal since second grade. As he heads to the district, he’ll miss his much-loved Lancers!
