THE UNIFIED Sports Team won first place in this year’s tournament. This program was started by Special Olympics Utah, it combines kids with and without special needs to compete together in games. In total, the kids played four games and won first place in their division. They played against Cyprus, Skyline, Hunter, and Kearns.
The excitement was undeniable as students celebrated their big win, energized by the cheers of fellow Lancers who came to show their support and share in the joy by creating lasting memories of an unforgettable victory.
Aranthssa Ruiz Maciel (12) enjoyed being part of the team. “We played on the basketball team. We had to run a lot and shoot the ball to score, but it was really fun. I’d definitely do it again!” she said.
Herschel Jackson (12) echoed her enthusiasm by expressing how much fun he had. Let’s not forget they took home first place!
Ramiro Quezada Villeneda (11) proudly reflected on his contribution. “It was very fun. I scored!” he said.
Zoey Freeman (9) couldn’t stop smiling after the tournament. She clearly had the time of her life.
Saleesha Dudley (9) described her first basketball game as an unforgettable experience, “My mom came to watch me play! It was scary because of the big crowd, but it was fun, and we had Chick-fil-A for lunch!” she said.
Russell Asay (9) kept it simple yet enthusiastically agreed with the rest of the team. “Yes, it was fun!” he said.
Juan Sierra Vivas (11) played in various moments and clearly enjoyed himself.
Genesis Gordiano Hernandez (10) chimed in with excitement: “It was fun, I loved it! Plus, I really enjoyed the Chick-fil-A lunch.”
A standout moment came from the dynamic duo Brian and Adrian, “I was bouncing the ball and scored a few with my best duo, Adrian,” Brian shared proudly.
It’s clear this tournament created unforgettable memories filled with joy, teamwork, and delicious meals, truly a slam dunk for everyone involved.
“The kids were so happy!” Ms. Parker said. She is so proud of Granger’s talented players.
“I had some of those students in my social dance class, and I am so proud. They are the sweetest kids, and I love how Granger rallies around them. It really inspires me how the students support each other,” Ms. Sutton said.
Granger fosters an environment where students are encouraged to grow, connect, and be inspired to reach their full potential.
Ms. Hartman also appreciates their fine work. “Unified Sports Team is the team offered to special education students. I think it’s awesome, I’m glad that kids can play the games,” Ms. Hartman said. She says it’s truly inspiring that every student at the school has the chance to get involved and be part of something meaningful.
An opportunity like this helps foster a sense of belonging and community, reminding everyone that no matter who they are or where they come from, they deserve to be included and valued. No one should ever be left out.
