CREATIVE writing is a class that helps students improve their writing skills by allowing them to explore various forms of literature, including poetry, prose, and fiction. The class is designed to help students express themselves creatively and is open to all grade levels with no prerequisites required.
Many Lancers enjoy creative writing as a class, and many teachers here love the opportunity to teach it. Oscar Campos (10), a student in Mr. Weimer’s creative writing class says the class helps him develop his skills in poetry and fiction. He also enjoys interacting with other writers and reviewing their work. “It gives meaning to what I write,” Campos said.
Creative writing can bring a lot of benefits to students.
Creative writing is also a great alternative for an English credit for those students who either failed a quarter of English or who would just rather take a class other than regular English. For them, this class is a great option. Kaylee Terhune (11), is a student in Ms. Green’s creative writing class and took her class as an alternative to a regular English class. She prefers writing poetry and stories rather than writing long essays or summaries often written in any other English class.
Granger High School has its very own way for students to share their writing. The literary magazine, also known as The Accolade, is a group of students who are currently enrolled in one of the creative writing classes. They’re in charge of creating the magazine, which is a collection of student-written poems and short stories published and available annually. This group of students gathers writing submitted by any Lancer and reviews it before eventually adding it to the magazine. “It’s a group of students who share their poetry,” Ms. Green, one of the advisers for the class, said.
However, as the end of the year approaches, the Accolade staff needs more students to submit poems, short stories, or any writing that is fiction. It is a great way for any student, not just those in creative writing, to have an opportunity to publish their work to the world.
