HALLOWEEN has always been a fun holiday for people around the world! One of the many Halloween activities is a trunk-or-treat. Not sure what that is? A trunk-or-treat is like trick-or-treating, but instead of going door to door, participants go from trunk to trunk. This way, people can just come to a parking lot, open their trunks, and hand out all different kinds of sweet treats. But Granger High has a different way of doing things. This all starts with Mrs. Smith and her class, The People of the Pacific (POP).
Granger’s People of the Pacific class has been running their trunk-or-treat for three years and has successfully kept it going. “This is a great event to run just so we can bring the community together in a fun way. It is also to bring happiness to these kids, not only by handing out candy but by the fun games we plan,” Mrs. Smith said. Let’s jump behind the scenes and see what Granger’s POP is plotting.
Each group of five students had to create a poster, a costume theme with their group, and a fun activity or game for the kids to participate in and win prizes. This is also a graded assignment, and the students will be graded on their cooperation and preparation. A prize will go to the best or favorite group. Every group had a spooky theme, such as ghosts and zombies, but Se Kofe (10) and his group’s theme was called ‘Purge or Get Purged.’
Their group created scary purge masks and a fun game. The goal of their game was to hit a target, and if they did, they would win a prize. Another group had a western cowboy-themed activity. Their game involved tossing a ring around a bottle to win a prize.
The trunk-or-treat was not just about games. Jhels Ki (11), and her group hosted a fun little haunted house. This was set up under a canopy with walls, and the kids would walk through it and get scared by POP students wearing masks.
Although it was POP’s activity plan, many other groups were involved in this event, including the JROTC, the Valley Jr. High Theatre Crew, and Latinos in Action. The event featured a variety of creative costumes, with everyone wearing something unique and different.
Overall, it was a success! The Granger POP crew had another successful year hosting their third annual trunk-or-treat. Many families from the West Valley City community came out and had a great time. Granger High alumni also helped their children with activities. Everyone had a great time at this year’s trunk-or-treat!
