THE WELDING class at Granger High offers many opportunities for current and future students who want to either be a welder or go into the Navy and Air Force. Mr. Murillo is the welding teacher at Granger High; he has taught many students the beginning steps to learn welding.
Last month, he actually won KSL’s teacher of the month and got rewarded with a $200 gift card for Harmon’s. Mr. Platero, the CTE counselor, nominated him for the award. The students at Granger High have nothing but good things to say about him.
Some of his welding students wonder what got him into welding and how long has he been doing it. “I actually tried to get out of my welding class when I was in tenth grade, but I gave it a shot, and as soon as I welded, I knew I wanted to continue doing it. I’ve now been at it for 43 years.” Mr. Murrillo said.
He has had a great passion to try and push his students to the best of their abilities. He wants to inspire his students with the opportunities that the welding career gives and how far it can take them. “My goal with these students is to get them jobs out of high school so they could start their careers as soon as possible.” Mr. Murillo is a hands-on teacher who teaches his students to get the basics down, and he always reassures them that they can do better and to never give up.
“I would say he’s the best teacher at Granger High, he’s taught me a lot of stuff even life lessons but he’s just a great teacher overall. He taught me persistence, even if you fail you get up and try again with your welds because you’re not just going to automatically get good at it,” Brennan Desalla (11) said.
Mr. Murillo has a big heart for his students, he says he loves when his students come back after high school and tell him what they’ve accomplished. Mr. Murillo is a very busy man and is grateful he has a job at Granger High, although he never thought he would work here. He used to sell big tools to big companies and says it somehow got him a job at Granger High, but he is very thankful for the opportunity he has.
Although people might be scared to take a welding class, Granger High hasn’t had any major accidents in this building. “The only accident I’ve experienced was a student that passed out in the shop due to the heat, but nothing major,” Mr. Murillo said.
Welding is an overall great class and has an upcoming test in November that students can take for an opportunity that could lead to a career welding in the Navy. Students who earn 80-100 on the test will automatically get scouted. For more details, contact the career center or ask Mr. Murillo.
